[MQ-PATCH] ditrack: dt-create-db-support-for-null-backend

Hey,

I have created a branch /src/branches/null-backend to contain changes 
related to this work. Once we figure out the approach to consistent 
testing with various backends, and have the test cases in place, we'll 
merge it back to the trunk. I'm not sure if that happens before or after 
0.6.

Slightly adjusted version of the patch has been committed in r1699.

I have removed trailing whitespace from all Python files, so it 
shouldn't be a problem anymore.

I'll send out separate email with my thoughts on testing.
